Loot Crate Unboxing: January 2017 “Origins”

What’s in the booox???

This month I received my first Loot Crate, which is also my first subscription box. I did some research around the internet, trying to decide on a subscription box geared toward my nerdy interests and Loot Crate was high on many lists. After receiving January’s “Origins” themed crate, I’m pretty happy with my investment.

The goods

Knowing the theme for this month was “Origins”, I had some preconceived notions about what that might entail. Marvel came to mind and superheroes in general, and I was pretty much right, with some pleasant surprises. Here’s what came in this month’s box:

1940’s Captain America Shield

Old school Captain America

A Loot Crate exclusive, this is the first shield that Captain America used in Captain America: The First Avenger, the 2011 film, during the 1940’s part of the movie. This shield is metal and pretty high quality, it even has mini arm straps on the back and comes with a stand, as seen above.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pin

Super cool pin.

This pin with the TMNT sewer logo is neat. Also, this month’s Lute Crate Magazine includes a promo code for five free digital Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic books on Comixology.

TMNT Raphael “Tiki Muglets” (aka shot glass)

Turtle-rific

Really love this item, which is also an exclusive. There are five different character TMNT muglets that could have come in your box and if you want to collect them all (they’re stack-able) then check out vault.lootcrate.com, though sadly Shredder is sold out.

Original “Jumpman” T-Shirt

Not quite Mario time!

Yet another exclusive (Loot Crate is good at that), this T-Shirt features Jumpman, the character from the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade and predecessor to Mario. This shirt might be my favorite item in the box. I love Mario and also the shirt fits very well. I wear a women’s small and typically t-shirts are very loose on me, but this one it fitted and of a nice material.

Action Comics #1 Reprintimg_3740

It’s a bird… and all that

Another exclusive (almost everything is), this is a reprint of the first comic book to feature Superman, published June, 1938. This reprint has the same ads from 1938 and was printed on the original newsprint stock.

In Review

Overall I’m very happy with this month’s crate, all the items are from properties that I enjoy. My favorite items are the Jumpman shirt, Raphael Tiki Muglet, and Action Comics #1, which are all great collectors items. It’s definitely right for the price ($15.99 a month plus shipping) and almost everything in the box is a Loot Crate Exclusive, so you can’t get these items other places.

Loot Crate is the most generic/inexpensive of the Loot Crate subscriptions. Also available for monthly subscriptions are Loot Crate DX (same theme as the normal Loot Crate, but with more items), Loot Anime, Loot Gaming, Loot Pets, and Loot Wear.

Also, each box includes the Loot Crate Magazine with info on each item and articles. Another cool thing, the boxes themselves transform. This “Origins” box can become a superman comic book holder.

February’s theme is “Build” and Loot Crate announced that it will feature Batman, Lego, Tetris, Dimensions, and Power Rangers. I’m excited to see what’s in store.
