With this weekend’s release of Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the summer movie season is officially underway (ignore the fact that the solstice isn’t until June). This summer brings a number of highly anticipated films, including a female-lead superhero movie along with some sequels, remakes, and originals.
Here are trailers for the films I’m most excited to see this summer:
Alien: Covenant
The sequel to 2012’s Prometheus, this newest edition to the Alien franchise follows the colony ship Covenant to a beautiful, uncharted planet with some unfriendly inhabitants. Go figure. This film is also under the direction of Ridley Scott.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
This sci-fi epic from French director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita) is based on the French comic series Valérian and Laureline (not sure why Cara Delevingne’s character was dropped from the title). Set in the 28th century, the film is about two operatives who go on a mission to the metropolis Alpha to deal with a dark force. I’m hoping to see some fun sci-fi entertainment in this one.

The Big Sick
A Micheal Showalter directed romantic-comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Holly Hunter, and Ray Romano. The film was written by Nanjiani and his wife Emily, based on the beginning of their own relationship. The reviews for this film have been overwhelmingly positive.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Always a fan of Arthurian adaptations, I want to see this Guy Ritchie film, even if it’s questionable as to whether it will be a hit or miss. This is the story of Arthur pulling the sword from the stone and claiming his birthright as King, as the title suggests.

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman made an appearance in the DC modern movie universe in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now, we will experience her origin story, as an Amazonian princess who saves the world.

The Dark Tower
This promising continuation of Stephen King’s novel series, staring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, is a science-fiction western in which good and evil must duel in order to save existence.
