Monthly Wrap: January 2018

“Monthly Wrap” is my monthly post about the things I’m loving, find interesting or just feel like sharing. In other words, whatever happens to be taking up space in my brain. Here’s where my head has been recently:

Vegas

I went to Las Vegas for the first time this month! I’m not big on the gambling- I typically get bored the moment I start losing money, but it was still a fun trip. The ornate hotels are a spectacle and I enjoyed walking around, taking in the decadence.

All the Pretty Horses

I am almost finished reading the first book of Cormac McCarthy’s “Border Trilogy”. The book begins on a Texas ranch and follows John Grady and his friend as they ride horseback to Mexico, searching for work and new beginnings. The book is excellent, full of humor, but also tragic and explores unfair circumstances that humanity is often dealt.

Runaways

I watched the first season of Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu, a series about a group of teens who come together after witnessing their parents sacrifice a teenage girl. I have not read the comic series, though I want to. Brian K. Vaughn is one of my favorite graphic novel writers. While the series is a bit teen-soap-melodrama, the plot is rich and complex and I could tell that the original story offered some impressive storytelling.

Penny Dreadful

Though this series ended, I recently started watching Penny Dreadful. The show brings together creatures of myth and folklore as well as famous eerie literary characters in a dark, twisted show set in the late 19th century.

New Adidas Gazelle

Bought a pair of these super comfy sneakers in Vegas. Walking 5 to 10 miles a day, I needed to show my feet some love.

Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations

A friend recommended this podcast and I’ve been listening to it on my drive to work each day. Oprah interviews writers, thinkers, theologians and spiritualists on finding meaning in life and the road to happiness. This podcast has made me think about what’s really important in life and how I can be the best version of myself.
