On this day, just 241 years ago, the woman who would bring us Mr. Darcy, lots of letters, happy love stories, and strolls through the countryside was born in Hampshire, England.
When I first read Pride and Prejudice years ago, I was surprised to find a book written so long ago that I could pour through so easily. I fell in love and went on to read Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion (I’m saving Emma for a rainy day).
Jane Austen’s books have been adapted to film many times over. Just this year Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was released, along with Love & Friendship. There have also been webseries and comic book adaptations of her work. Probably many more interpretations to come still, as her characters, stories, and themes have a timelessness that has withstood two centuries.
